On a somewhat wet and dismal Wednesday morning, a team of 8 seniors headed over to the wonderful Wharton Park course near to Kidderminster to take part in the reconvened Inter Club Championship. As current holders, following a 3 year break due to Covid, expectations were high that the team could maintain possession of the title against fellow Club Company Seniors.
A format of pairs Stapleford greensomes, with the best 3 of the 4 pairs scores being totalled to provide a team score, was the challenge for the day. As the first match teed off at 11.30 am, the sun started to replace the rain making for easier playing conditions on a very testing track. However, scoring proved to be difficult with many of the field in the event returning scores well below expectation.
After 5 hours of competition and a light buffet tea, the host captain announced that the winners from Wharton Park, enjoying home advantage for sure, had beaten the holders of the title by a single point with a grand total of 108 against the Warwickshire's 107. If only that putt had dropped on the 18th!!!!
Many thanks to Brian Barraclough, Chris Knowles, Geoff Fenson, Geoff Wooldridge, Geoff Sault, Jon Stranks and Dave Parsons for putting up a spirited defence of the throphy. Maybe next year?
